As a child, what did you think you’d do when you grew up?

I was about 12 years old when I knew I wanted to be a journalist. I never strayed from that. I have a journalism degree from Ohio University, a master of mass communication from the University of South Carolina and worked as a full-time reporter/editor for about 10 years. I absolutely loved being a reporter and believe journalism is an important profession. I still freelance for some magazines around Charleston because I so enjoy interviewing people and telling their stories.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

Make coffee! Then it’s brewing while I take care of the dog and ready for my morning devotional time.

Favorite book? Favorite podcast?

Podcast: Building a StoryBrand

Book: Aside from the Bible, there are so many favorites. I love reading! When I want to unwind, I often turn to a Lisa Scottoline mystery.

One Word. What is your life like as an entrepreneur?
Full

Tell us about your business & how it came to be.
I started my marketing company in November 2011. After getting laid off from my journalism job in 2008, I had to look for alternative career options. I landed in marketing and PR. After working for a Charleston area PR firm for a couple of years, I wanted to branch out on my own. Fisher Creative has grown and morphed and yet, at every stage, I’ve been blessed to work with some incredible clients and colleagues.

Having done CrossFit for a number of years, my husband and I often talked about having our own gym. In July 2018, we bought CrossFit Charleston located just off Clements Ferry Road. These days, I divide my time between Fisher Creative and CrossFit Charleston.

What does a typical day in your life look like?
I’m up every day at 5 a.m. (4:10 a.m. if I happen to be coaching the 5 a.m. CrossFit class). I try to start each day reading my Bible, praying and journaling. I usually get in a little bit of work before getting my daughter off to school. During the day, I’m working on writing and PR projects. I might be filming videos and doing social media content for the gym or meeting a perspective member at the facility for a free intro session or nutrition consultation. I’ll likely have a meeting or a call with a client. I pick my daughter up from school and usually head to the gym for a workout. Evenings are dinner, homework and maybe squeezing in a TV show before falling into bed at 9 p.m.

Fill in the blank. I'm on a mission to…
Live with intention, honoring my faith and creativity by leading and motivating others to be the best version of themselves.

Who inspires you to be the best entrepreneur you can be?
My 11-year-old daughter.

How did you handle fear & doubt when it comes up?
Pray, pray and pray. I try to hand it over to God and not worry, but that’s often easier said than done!

What would you say are the top 3 skills or traits needed to be a successful business owner?
Excellent writing and communication skills

Organized

Willingness to take chances

How do you define success?
Living in my purpose. Being a good wife and mother. Helping others through my work.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Relax. Actually, that’s probably advice to my current self too!
